problems using access point with router?
I bought a new wireless router to use as an access point to connect to my existing wireless router to extend the wireless range at my house. I disabled DHCP server on the router I wanted to use as an access point and connected my router's ethernet out slot 2 to the access point's ethernet in, and everything seems to work fine, and my computer says it's getting a great signal, but limited or no connectivity when I am using the access point. I can still use the access point's ethernet ports. but I am not getting any internet via wireless through the access point. If I try to get internet through the access point, it says it can't aquire an IP address. Can anyone tell me why? I have the internet connection type on the router I want top use as an access point set to Automatic configuration (DHCP), but I have the DHCP server option disabled.
I am using a Belkin F5D9230-4 router, and the router that I want to use as an access point is a Linksys WRT54G2
Sounds like you have a good start here. It would help to know what router and AP you are using. Here are some of the things I would look at:
Make sure the following wireless settings are the same on the AP and wireless adapter:
* SSID (SSIDs are case sensitive)
* WEP settings (make sure the encryption levels and keys match)
* Network Mode is the same (Infrastructure or Ad Hoc)
If you still cannot get a wireless connection try disabling all security settings(WEP, IP address blocking, MAC address filtering, and enable the Broadcast SSID). Change the SSID to ANY on all devices. If you still cannot get a wireless connection try moving the units closer together.
