Home central server/computer?

Is it possible to set up a network very much like they have running in a business and/or school, where all the computers log onto a central computer/server where all the files are stored, along with settings, the layout of the desktop etc etc (Basically everything) no matter what computer on the network you log onto.

If so, how?

Thankyou!
Is it possible to do it without extra software?
Sorry, forgot to say, I do have a computer with a huge amount of hardspace, ram, etc. Can I do it with that? Or will i need to buy an actual server?

Yup, you will need a server (windows server 2000, 2003, 0r 2008 is in beta), active directory should allow you to set up most of the things you require. Central logins, file storage and desktop settings
