performance monitoring server 2003

Win Server 2003(cluster-compatible-disk defragmentation-Network Monitor-DHCP)
what are the basic requirements for an application to be cluster-compatible?
how does disk defragmentation improve system performance?
what data can you capture with Network Monitor?
how can you use DHCP to configure client computers to use a WINS or DNS server?
Server 2003 is cluster compatible.
we do not cluster applications we cluster servers for scalability and load balancing, so it does not really depend on the application , its dependent on the operating system, cluster services , network adapters and basically the whole setup ( configuration ) .
Disk defragmentation
it just aligns the data and queues it up properly/neatly closer together. This reorganization of data in close order makes the disk faster. By aligning all files closely , more free space is also generated. Why does fragmentation happen in the first place, well as we all now files come in different shapes and sizes eg lets take a jigsaw puzzle if you arrange the pieces out of order the require more space rather when organized in order.
Network monitor
used basically to analyse network trafiic. It makes uses of all popular protocols, it can catch a packet and tell from which process it came and also can give you the PID number. Analyse frames and filter packets etc
You can configure DHCP to use WINS or DNS in two ways
click on start menu> programs> administrative tools> configure your server wizard > click on next and select DHCP from the list... as you go on configuring, at some point of time it will ask you for DNS config as well as WINS.
You can also use manage your server
click on start menu> programs> admin tools> manage your server
DHCP ....and hence forth
