server directory listing
what server permission allows accest to files but not folder directory?
I was hoping that someone can answer this for me. i have a personal website. it is hosted on a unix based server. ok, im not sure what permissions to set. lets say i have a folder on the server. this folder has 20 jpg images. i certainly want people to access an image on there. lets say domain/pictures/pic1.jpg but... i dont want them to be able to put in domain/pictures.
I dont want them to access the list of files in that folder. they must know the exact path to get it. i see this a lot on websites. ill see a html website that has pics on it but if you read the source code and type the path to the folder it is in, it say says " you do not have permission to access this folder"
what permission would i set the folder itself? and what permission would i set each image? to accomplish what i see is so common.
i guess the easiest way to say this is: i want to be able to display images on my site but not allow them to go to the folder and see all of its contents.
I think that you need to prevent that your web server indexes the directory and display the content of it. Usually it is already blocked on most of the web servers but I'm not sure if this is the same in unix.
The permissions of the images and directories must be according to your companie's security policy. usually they can be read and write by others.
