I'm a newbie to Exchange, which version of Exchange should I start with ?

I'm super new to exchange, meaning I have no experience, like no clue what it does or how to use it other that it is used for email. I do however, do have a networking background. Which version do you recommend to star with ? Which version is the most dominant in the field now ? 2007 or 2010 ? Also any tips of what to expect? Is it harder than learning about server 2003?, meaning active directory, dns, dhcp, and anything that relates to becoming an MCSE ? Thanks.

Well, Exchange 2007 is the most dominant and probably will be for the next year; however, Exchange server 2010 will take over as businesses migrate. You should probably start with Exchange 2010. An Exchange Server setup is, what I would consider, an advanced setup compared to a Server OS and its components. Since Exchange Server integrates with Active Directory, you do need to have a server domain system setup with DNS before you can install Exchange. It is more difficult to manage and to maintain than Server 2003 or server 2008 ... Unless you really know what you're doing.

I'd suggest reading up on server 2010 deployments and get a basic instruction list before purchasing and attempting to set it up. The down side to having it completely integrated into Active Directory is if you really mess things up, it could severely impact your directory system. Just be careful and good luck!
