Is it really that rude for a server to ask?

"Do you need change?"

I can't see what's in that check presenter, and I think it's more rude to count it in front of you, OR go to get change and see that it is obviously meant to be a tip for me. THEN what do I do? Bring it back to you?
You'd be surprised at how often I say "I'll be right back with your change" and they say OK. I go to make change, and it is OBVIOUSLY even with a tip for me. (exact coin and a bunch of singles). Now what?

As a customer I never thought it was rude for the server to ask because I understand the question. But as a server, I usually refrain from asking and just say I will be right back with your change. Especially if they are new or unfamiliar customers. But even then, I still usually don't question and just do it.
