xampp/Apache http server noobie (linux)?

hi!
i'm currently using ubuntu 8.04 with apache 2.2.8 and i've never quite used linux before, but i'm a little better with it now i can get around a bit with terminal... anyway. sothe problem is i've installed xampp(lampp). now i'm trying to set up my own little website and i need a simple explaination of a few things, i am so very confused. I can't get my little test web page up, i've modified httpd.conf so many times and it doesn't change my page directory. so i guess my question is how do i set up httpd.conf so it'll make my http://localhost my main webpage because i really don't want anyone to access my xampp control area. other question involves .htacess. what is it and how do i make it if i need it? good luck to anyone who can answer this...

This question is from the homework of my project management course. I followed the question until it hit crystalball. Crystal ball is apparently a microsoft product. How do i complete the following question?

A dot-com startup has decided to upgrade its server computers. It is also contemplating a shift from its Unix-based platform to a Windows-based platform. Three major platforms will be affected whichever platform they choose; hardware costs, software conversion costs, and employee training costs. The firm's technical group has studied the matter and has made the following estimates for the cost changes.
Using Crystal ball and assuming the costs may all be represented by triangular distributions, simulate the problem 1000 times. Given the information resulting from the simulation, discuss the decision problem.

crystal ball is a old add-on to excel that allowed simulations like this. i don't think its still around but maybe part of the course available software in the lab
