How do I set up a LAN in my home?
I want to link up two PC's and a laptop so that I can store my files all in one place and access the internet on a wireless connection. Is this possible with what I've got, ie 2x PCs and sometimes a laptop? I realise I'll need network cards and a wireless router but do I need a server as well?
What is the best way to set up a LAN?
Can I add in an external HDD to the system?
you do not need a server. the basic thing to do is to make sure each machine is in the same workgroup. That way they can share files and printers. Pick one of the PCs as the central place to store files. Create a folder and then share it (right click on the folder and select sharing).
Then on the other PC and laptop go to my computer and click on tools and map a network drive. Pick a letter and select browse. You will see the workgroup name you picked and just click until you see the new folder share. Select that and you will map the drive on the other PC and you can share files in that way.
if you don't set the workgroup the exact same name on all machines you are going to have trouble. (Control Panel, System, Computer Name).
