What character typically separates first and last names in French email address syntax?

I tried underscore and it failed. Is hyphen more commonly used? The party who gave me the address said the character was on the number 6. French keyboard has hyphen as default, shifts to get 6 and Alt to get pipe or vertical line. If hyphen is the proper character and I type a hyphen on the American keyboard, will the server translate the address properly? Thanks!

Like in US, most commonly used is dot "."
You might also find underscore "_"
and maybe hyphen too "-" ,

Hyphen is typically used for double names ("prénom composé") like Jean-Marc (which is a first name only)
e.g. jean-pierre.dupont@yahoo.fr

Don't worry about the server, it takes what it gets.
The hyphen on the key next to zero on American keyboard corresponds to the french hyphen on key 6.
